Iran Stock Market

Formally Persia, in 1979, Iran became an Islamic Republic and a theocratic rule was created where a religious intellectual, or Supreme Leader, held political power. Relations with the U.S. became tense in 1979, when Iranian students took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. Identified as a supporter of terrorism, Iran is subject to U.S. sanctions and export controls. The attempt to bring reforms to the country was brought to an end by the conservative forces. The conservatives won the 2003 municipal elections and, in 2005, a conservative leader became President.
