Philippines Stock Market

Declared an autonomous commonwealth in 1935. From 1944 to 1945, the U.S. and Filipino militaries united to fight the Japanese who had taken over the islands, and in 1946, the islands became sovereign. In 1986, Ferdinand MARCOS, who had governed the islands for 20 years, was forced into exile and was replaced by Corazon AQUINO, who in turn was unable to bring political steadiness in the country. Fidel RAMOS, president in 1992, was able to bring some solidity to the country as well as some economic reforms. In 1998, Joseph ESTRADA was chosen for office but was expelled and replaced by Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, who in 2004 was elected for another six years. Communist insurgents and Muslim separatists threaten the state.
